Um trágico acidente chocou turistas e moradores da região de Vaca Key, na Flórida, durante um passeio de barco em família. Judy Kay Zagorski, de 57 anos, moradora do estado de Michigan, morreu instantaneamente após ser atingida no rosto por uma arraia-pintada gigante que saltou repentinamente da água. O caso, ocorrido na primavera de 2008, foi classificado por especialistas como um evento “extremamente raro”.
Judy estava sentada na parte da frente do barco, que navegava a cerca de 40 km/h próximo à cidade de Marathon, quando o animal, com cerca de 34 kg e envergadura de quase 1,8 metro, emergiu do mar e colidiu violentamente com ela. O impacto foi tão forte que a derrubou para trás, provocando um traumatismo craniano com múltiplas fraturas no crânio. De acordo com o legista do condado de Monroe, Judy morreu na hora. Nenhuma perfuração provocada pelos ferrões venenosos da arraia foi identificada — a força do choque foi suficiente para causar os ferimentos fatais.
O episódio aconteceu diante dos olhos da irmã de Judy, Joyce Ann Miller, que estava ao seu lado e saiu ilesa. Também estavam a bordo o pai da vítima, Virgil Bouck, que conduzia a embarcação, e sua mãe, Verneta. A família aproveitava as férias de primavera na região.
Após o choque, a arraia caiu morta dentro do barco. Autoridades ambientais informaram que o comportamento de saltar fora da água é comum entre esses animais — geralmente como forma de escapar de predadores ou se livrar de parasitas — mas ressaltaram que colisões com humanos são extremamente raras. A espécie é protegida por lei na Flórida e costuma nadar próxima à superfície, sem demonstrar comportamento agressivo.
As arraias-pintadas podem atingir até 225 kg e uma envergadura de 3 metros. Apesar do tamanho, são animais pacíficos e geralmente evitam o contato com humanos. Casos como o de Judy são quase inéditos, embora haja registros esporádicos de arraias pulando em embarcações. A morte trágica foi comparada, pela imprensa americana, à do ambientalista australiano Steve Irwin, que faleceu em 2006 após ser ferido por uma arraia.
A notícia da morte de Judy causou forte comoção. Em entrevista à NBC News, seu irmão, Dan Bouck, descreveu a irmã como uma mulher generosa e dedicada, que fazia trabalho voluntário com pacientes em estado terminal e administrava um camping e marina com o marido, Steve Zagorski, já falecido. “Ela era uma irmã incrível, sempre ajudando os outros”, disse Dan.
O acidente reacendeu discussões sobre segurança em atividades de lazer com embarcações em regiões de vida marinha ativa. No entanto, especialistas reforçam que esse tipo de ocorrência é extremamente improvável e não representa um risco frequente para turistas.
